Tiefenrausch, rapture of the deep - 2012

selfportraits photography

Tiefenrausch, is a german expression that calls a phenomenon similar to alcohol intoxication, which can lead to unconsciousness and death.

Also known as, nitrogen or inert gas anaesthesia, it is a noisy state that can occur when diving from a depth of about 30 m.
Too high nitrogen partial pressure can cause disorders of the central nervous system due to the high lipid solubility of nitrogen.

In the case of deep intoxication, these are accompanied by severe cognitive disabilities and possibly mortal euphoria.
It is treated by immediate ascension to shallower depths.

In this case, decompression sickness can occur, regardless of the depth rush, if the ascent is too fast.
